Damp can manifest itself in many ways: the presence of black mould in corners, an unpleasant smell that never seems to get away permanently, a skirting board that becomes soggy to the touch, or plaster that never gets fixed no matter how many times you redecorate. As a damp proofing expert, our priority is to find out what is actually the source of moisture and then recommend a treatment, because the three primary ways moisture gets inside a building — rising damp, penetrating damp, and condensation — each require a unique method of treatment.
Rising damp control generally includes the application of a chemical DPC (damp-proof course) injected into the wall along with the replastering work. However, one needs to make sure that the wall is dried out completely before replastering, otherwise the plaster won’t stick.
There might be any number of reasons for a leak from the roof downwards, like roof damage, cracked tiles, or windows. If we just treat the wall with a damp proofing injection but the roof leakage continues unabated, this is not only a waste of money and labour but also leads to serious health problems from mould or bacteria. Having seen this pattern, it’s better to get it examined if the place shows the same thing as it did last time. A second redecoration can only be avoided if the root of the problem is fixed.
